FIRST PTSO MEETING THURSDAY NIGHT
The CIS Parent-Teacher-Student Organization (PTSO) welcomes all our new and returning parents/guardians to the first meeting of the year, Thursday, September 7th at 6:30pm.
RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY ON WORLD PEACE DAY, SEPTEMBER 21ST
In schools and communities around the world, Thursday, September 21st will be celebrated as World Peace Day. Here at CIS the day will have special historic significance with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for our beautiful shade structure—and the creation of our entire campus—at 1:30pm.
We have been so busy the past two years that we never had a formal ceremony to mark our presence in this special setting. With the new canopy, funded by a grant from the American Dermatology Association, as an inspiration, we will honor the work of those who made our campus a reality.
It will be a short historic ceremony. We ask that all of our students wear their
special occasion shirts and navy blue shorts/slacks/skirts that day. More
details will follow in the next weeks.
SAVE THE DATE—
UNCC INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
Don’t miss this event with your family! If you value international experience—and that’s what CIS is all about—make plans to attend the UNC-C annual International Festival, Saturday, September 30th from 10am -6pm in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
It is a kaleidoscope of multicultural colors, cuisine, and costumes. Every student receives his/her own passport to collect flag stickers from the dozens of international booths. We will encourage all our students to attend. Be sure to join them! http://ifest.uncc.edu/
SPORTS SEASONS OPEN
Our girls volleyball team had its first match last week against St. Michael's. They won the first game but lost the match. Their next competition is tonight!
The Comets coed soccer team opens its season Thursday night versus Metrolina. And the cross country team runs next Tuesday for the first time.

CLARIFYING THE P.E. UNIFORM
We appreciate the cooperation and support of our families in purchasing P.E. uniforms from the school. The primary reason for this was to establish a common uniform among our students in their P.E. classes and throughout the school on those days. We are glad that we could arrange an economical source with good quality products. Special thanks goes to Charlotte Halperin (and family) for many, many hours of dedicated service to this program.
We want to clarify and update the P.E. uniform policy during this transition time:
1. We will continue to permit the use of the original blue CIS logo t-shirt. You do NOT have to replace those shirts now, or after the first of the year.
2. Where we had the most variation was in the shorts/sweatpants. Those need to be purchased from the school by January 1st, 2007. After that time, students not in correct uniform may lose credit.
3. In the meantime, students can wear either last year’s P.E. uniform OR the normal school uniform (red, white, or blue polo shirt; blue or khaki shorts/slacks). Girls should NOT wear skirts on P.E. days.
4. We will work with the PTSO to assist any CIS families for whom the purchase of the new P.E. uniforms is a financial hardship. Please communicate directly with Dr. Beall. This will be kept confidential.
Thank you for helping us maintain our school uniform policies. They reduce cost, improve convenience, and create a more coherent and equitable learning environment for our students and staff.
FINALLY! Special thanks to Austin Canvas and Awnings for the beautiful new classroom signs. We’ve wanted to cover the vestiges of the old signs for over a year, and are very grateful for this special donation by the Albertson family. They have also donated the new sign at the campus entrance. Thank you, from the entire CIS community!
SPECIAL OCCASION UNIFORM SHIRTS
Please remember that this fall’s school pictures will be October 12th. All students are expected to be in the “Special Occasions” uniform shirt that day: white polo with school logo.
You can order these shirts from the school. Orders received by the 10th of each month should be received by the beginning of the following month.
BIRTHDAY PARTY POLICY
In the same spirit as our uniform policy, we are establishing a new policy for celebrating birthdays in our K-6 classrooms. On the first school day of each month, we will celebrate the birthdays of ALL the students in the classroom born that month. Parents will be welcome to bring small nutritious snacks to class that day. We will work with our room parents to ensure that each month we have snacks to share.
This policy will enable all students to feel recognized and appreciated on their
birthday, regardless of the family’s financial status. We will ask that the
snacks are both small and nutritious, not complete meals like pizza. Again, we
thank you for showing your respect for the diversity of our CIS community.
We also ask that deliveries not be made to the school for individual students, e.g., flowers, balloons, etc. Any deliveries will be held in the office until the end of the school day.
